MANILA, Philippines — Sixty-six people were hired on the spot during a job fair organized by Marikina as part of the city’s 396th founding anniversary.
Mayor Marjorie Ann Tedoro said the activity is part of efforts to find jobs for Marikina residents.
“We want to help our people find jobs, especially in the light of the crisis we are facing,” Teodoro said in Filipino in a statement, referring to the conflict in the Middle East that resulted to high cost of fuel and goods.
According to the city government, 1,227 applicants attended the fair to find jobs offered by 50 companies in the food, retail and manufacturing sectors.
Ace Hardware, Goldilocks Bakeshop, LBC Express, Meralco Industrial Engineering Services, Power Mac Center, The Medical City and Bonchon Chicken Philippines were among companies that participated in the event.
“The city government will never grow tired of providing you with these opportunities. We will make sure that our job fairs will come out better, and with more companies participating,” Teodoro said.
Meanwhile, Manila has launched its Summer Pride 2026, a celebration highlighting LGBTQIA+ inclusivity and visibility in the city.
Held outside the traditional June observance, the city government said this is an attempt to develop a Pride celebration that could model the extent of similar events in Marikina and Quezon City.
“It’s in the tourism code of Manila. It is to remind people that there is an ordinance that there should be no discrimination,” said Cristal Bagatsing, chief of Manila’s department of tourism, culture and arts.
Bagatsing said the event is driven by community effort, stressing that no budget came from the government.
Manila Summer Pride 2026 kicked off with “Palarong Pambekshie” at the San Andres Complex, featuring Filipino games with a queer twist.
A caravan will be held on April 21 to provide livelihood opportunities for LGBTQIA+ members in the city.
A pride parade is set for April 25 from Quirino Grandstand to Remedios Circle in Malate.
