MANILA, Philippines — Six members of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity have surrendered to police in connection with the hazing that led to the death of 19-year-old maritime student Mark Kenneth Alcedo in Cavite on March 1. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said four of the suspects – John Lee Tuliao, Archie Rosil, Kenneth Ompod and John Rey Torrecampo – voluntarily surrendered to Cavite police on Sunday with the assistance of their lawyers, representatives of the fraternity’s national council and police intelligence officers.
“The four who surrendered were brought to the provincial director of the Cavite police yesterday,” Remulla said, adding that they were among those present during the fraternity initiation rites.
“I don’t have the full details yet, but they were part of the actual initiation,” he said.
Earlier in the week, a boy whose name is yet to be released was the first to surrender to Gen. Trias Mayor Luis Ferrer IV.
The sixth member, a 19-year-old boy, surrendered to Dasmariñas Mayor Jenny Barzaga on Sunday.
Remulla said the Tau Gamma Phi national leadership had promised to surrender all those involved.
“They said they would surrender everyone. I gave them three days, and only two days have passed. Let’s see up to (today) if they will be able to surrender all the others,” Remulla noted. “I’m glad they are cooperating, but (the surrender) cannot be done in installments.”
He advised suspects still in hiding to surrender before police units begin tracking them down.
“Those who are hiding should not wait for the full force of the law to find them. Anyone harboring these fugitives can also be charged,” Remulla said.
Col. Ariel Red, Cavite police director, said 14 people and three unidentified individuals were charged with homicide and violation of the anti-hazing law before the Dasmariñas City Prosecutor’s Office yesterday.
Alcedo died after the initiation rites held in an open field in Dasmariñas on March 1.
Although brought to the General Trias Medical Center, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
An autopsy showed that Alcedo died from blunt force trauma to his lower extremities. – Ed Amoroso, Rainier Allan Ronda
