NEGROS ORIENTAL, Philippines – Six foreigners who went trekking in Valencia, Negros Oriental in Central Visayas Region on Wednesday, March 19, were reported missing, the Valencia Municipal Police Station told Rappler on Friday, March 21.

The Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NORPPO) confirmed on Friday noon that two of the missing individuals have been found but are unable to release their identities in the meantime.

Corporal Wilber Limaco, desk officer at the Valencia Police Station, initially identified the missing foreigners as:

  • Torsten Martin Groschupp, 58, German
  • “Terry,” 50, Canadian
  • Alexander, Radvanyi, 63, British
  • Aldwin Fink, 60, German
  • Anton Chernov, 38, Russian
  • “Wolfgang,” 67, German

Limaco said that based on their initial report, the foreigners went on a trek to the mountain in Sitio Lunas in Barangay Malabo, Valencia on Wednesday at around 8 am.

The day after, Limaco narrated, they failed to reach home and could no longer be contacted via their mobile phones, prompting two wives of two of the foreigners to ask help from the police.

Operatives of the Valencia Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office began search and rescue operations in the mountain on Thursday, March 20 but were suspended later in the day.

NORPPO spokesman Lieutenant Stephen Polinar told Rappler on Friday morning that the search and rescue operations will be resumed on Friday, March 21.

“We were just informed about the case of the missing foreign nationals late last night (March 20), and so within 24 hours, we will do our best to coordinate with other government agencies concerned to address or locate them as soon as possible,” he said.

Polinar said they need to gather more information about the missing foreigners, as well as their activities prior to their trek.

Limaco added that three of the missing foreigners have families who reside in East Balabag village in Valencia.

The desk officer highlighted that two of their friends — Wolfgang and Terry — had just arrived last week to join them for their scheduled climb. – Rappler.com
