57 nabbed in Region 6 under Comelec gun ban

ILOILO CITY — A total of 57 individuals in Western Visayas have so far been arrested in the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) nationwide gun ban, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) reported.

The PRO-6 said that of the individuals apprehended from Jan. 12 to Feb. 23, 56 firearms were confiscated, including six gun replicas.

Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office recorded the highest number with 17 arrests, followed by the Iloilo Police Provincial Office with 11.

The Capiz Police Provincial Office made nine arrests, while the Bacolod City Police Office had seven.

The Iloilo City Police Office reported four arrests, while the Aklan and Guimaras Police Provincial Offices each recorded three.

The Antique Police Provincial Office made one arrest, and the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 6 made two.

The nationwide gun ban began on Jan. 12 and will remain in effect until June 11, 2025, as stipulated by Comelec Resolution 11067.

Under the Omnibus Election Code, individuals are prohibited from carrying firearms outside their residences or places of business unless authorized by the Comelec.

Only members of law enforcement agencies duly deputized by the Comelec are allowed to carry firearms during this period.

Certain officials, including high-ranking government officials and those responsible for handling large sums of money, may be exempt from this prohibition. This includes positions such as the president, vice president and members of Congress.
