MANILA, Philippines — A beep card dedicated to students will be launched in September, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Wednesday, August 13.

The cards will automatically apply a 50% discount, eliminating the need for students to purchase a discounted single-journey ticket.

“Pupunta lang sila sa kahit anong station next month, ipapakita ang ID at ipi-print ang beep card right then and there. Ire-renew lang nila ‘yan every after school year,” Transport Secretary Vince Dizon said,

(They just need to go to any station next month, show their school ID, and the beep card will be printed right there and then. They just need to renew it after every school year.)

The discounted cards can be used at the LRT-1, LRT-2 and MRT-3 stations.

Meanwhile, white cards are available for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. These cards already have a 50% discount.

While the student beep cards will be launched in September, the DOTr said that, in the meantime, students no longer need to fill out a form to receive a discount.

Dizon added that they are working to digitize the information-gathering process instead.

Also addressing the shortage of beep cards, Dizon said that there will be 300,000 new cards available by next week.

Beep cards have a validity of four years, or until they have maxed out their transactions.

Dizon warned against planning to hoard the beep cards to sell them at higher prices.

“We are coordinating with the PNP (Philippine National Police) and SAICT (Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation). Babantayan namin ‘yung bawat istasyon para mahuli itong mga loko-lokong ito. Papahuli at ipapakulong natin sila,” said Dizon.

(We are coordinating with the PNP and SAICT. We will guard every station to catch these scoundrels. We will catch them and jail them.)
