The town of Maragondon in Cavite has played a vital role in Philippine history. For one, it is the place where Andres Bonifacio and his brother Procopio were executed.

According to Jonathan Andal's report on "24 Oras," Monday, the name "Maragondon" originated from the Tagalog word "dagundong," which refers to a rumbling or thunderous sound. Locals used this word to describe the Maragondon River, which was once shallow but had a strong, rushing current that produced a roaring, thunder-like noise.

Over time, the term "madagundong" evolved into the name we now know as Maragondon.

If you are looking for some new places to visit this summer, here are five things you can check out in Maragondon, Cavite.

1. Maragondon Church

The 400-year-old Maragondon Church is home to Nuestra Senora Del Asuncion. Built in 1618, the church also served as the prison of Andres and Procopio as well as the camp site of General Emilio Aguinaldo in 1897.

2. Bonifacio Trial House

A few minutes walk from the church is the Bonifacio Trial House where Andres and Procopio were tried.

Inside the trial house, visitors will be welcomed by a diorama which plays the conversation during the trial of the Bonifacio brothers.

3. Ancestral houses

The historic town also boasts several ancestral houses, including the former office of General Mariano Noriel, one of the tribunal members who presided over the trial of the Bonifacio brothers.

It was within the walls of this very house that the order to execute Andres and Procopio Bonifacio was issued.

4. Bonifacio Shrine

A half hour drive from the town will lead you to Mount Nagpatong, where you will find the Bonifacio Shrine.

It is said that it is the place where Andres and Procopio were shot.

5. Maragondon River

After some walking tour, it's now time to have a relaxing time in the Maragondon River, where the town got its name.

While in the river, you can rent a bump car that will allow you to explore its deep and vast waters.

Aside from these historical landmarks, don't miss out on the town's specialty dish—Sinangag na Patis—a unique twist on the classic adobo, made with fish sauce instead of soy sauce.

Be sure to try their beloved delicacy called Kasintahan—a sweet treat that resembles biko but with a cheesy surprise at its center. —Jade Veronique Yap/MGP, GMA Integrated News
