Taal, Batangas is the last stop of GMA Integrated News' "Summer Past-yalan" series, and the destination is nothing short of a vibrant time capsule rich in history, culture, and charm.
According to Katrina Son's report on "24 Oras," Tuesday, Taal is dubbed the Heritage Town of Batangas and has served as home to some of the Filipino ilustrados during the Spanish era.
Taal is protected by the Taal Heritage Preservation Code, which was passed to safeguard the town's structures.
"Kaya hindi maaaring basta-basta sirain o gibain o palitan ang itsura ng isang old structure. Hindi napapabayaan ang ating mga old structures. Sumasabay tayo sa modernization pero 'yung ating heritage and culture, napi-preserve pa rin natin," municipal tourism officer Atty. Maria Carlota Cerdeña said.
Here are five things to check out when visiting Taal.
1. Museo nina Leon at Galicano Apacible
Taal is home to more than 100 heritage houses, or Bahay na Bato, including the one owned by Don Leon Apacible, who was a well-known lawyer and served as the right hand of General Miguel Malvar.
Inside the house is an "ante sala," which means before the living room, and an Aparador de Tres Lunas, or three moon cabinets, which signified wealth in the past. It requires 20 to 30 people to lift.
2. Museo nina Marcela Mariño at Felipe Agoncillo
The house of Doña Marcela Mariño Agoncillo, recognized as the "Mother of the Philippine Flag," is also turned into a museum.
Doña Marcela had six children with her husband, Felipe Agoncillo, the first Filipino diplomat.
Their home had an ancient form of a CCTV or peephole, which allows them to see those entering the house through a small opening on the floor.
3. Galleria Taal
Inside Galleria Taal is a collection of over 200 vintage cameras, which are all in working condition.
The museum is a great reminder of how different today's era of cellphones and digital cameras is compared to the past.
4. Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Caysasay
The Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Caysasay is the only church in Luzon made of coral stones. The unique construction, along with its thickness and height, makes the church naturally cool inside.
The shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of Caysasay, whose image is believed to be miraculous.
5. Tapang Taal
Head to the Pamilihang Bayan ng Taal, where visitors can try the famous Tapang Taal, loved for its delicious taste and softness.
Other local souvenirs also available are the balisong and embroidered clothes. —Carby Rose Basina/MGP, GMA Integrated News
