Scene of the Crime Operatives inventory the items found inside an abandoned vehicle along Adriatico Street in Malate, Manila yesterday. Authorities are in- vestigating whether the vehicle is connected to a kidnapping case foiled by the Anti-Kidnapping Group on Wednesday in Parañaque.

Parañaque shootout

MANILA, Philippines —  Four men, including two dismissed police officers, who held a Filipino-Indian businessman for a P10-million ransom were killed in an alleged shootout with police in Parañaque on Wednesday night.

The suspects were killed by members of the Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) during a rescue operation for the 78-year-old victim at the Aseana complex at 7:52 p.m., according to PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.

“During the rescue, the suspects engaged responding personnel, resulting in an armed encounter,” Nartatez said in a statement.

He added that all the suspects were pronounced dead in a hospital, while the responding police officer who sustained minor wounds is in stable condition.

The AKG identified the suspects as Argel Nabor, Robert Allan Raz, Rhian de Guzman and Robin Reyes – all alleged members of a kidnap-for-ransom gang.

Nabor was dismissed from the PNP due to a case for malversation of funds while Raz was kicked out after going AWOL or absent without leave.

PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said the victim was kidnapped on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. after leaving his office in Parañaque.

At 7:30 p.m., one of the suspects called the businessman’s daughter-in-law using the victim’s cellphone and asked for a P50-million ransom.

After another hour, the kidnappers called the victim’s wife using his cellphone and reiterated their demand.

Tuaño said the ransom went down to P10 million after negotiations between the victim’s family and the kidnappers.

“At 10:30 p.m. of April 14, the daughter-in-law and the businessman’s wife reported the incident to the AKG,” Tuaño said in a news briefing.

After the victim’s family handed over the ransom money on Wednesday at 7:11 p.m., police moved in on the suspects.

The PNP is investigating if the suspects were involved in previous kidnap-for-ransom cases.
