COTABATO CITY (Updated 6 p.m.)— Five policemen were wounded in a clash with a wanted person and his heavily armed accomplices in Barangay Lumbak, Buadiposo-Buntong, Lanao del Sur on Monday morning, May 4, with one of the injured officers later dying.

Local executives and officials of the Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office said on Monday afternoon that the wounded policemen, whose names were withheld pending notification of their families, were immediately brought to a hospital by emergency responders for treatment.

Captain Steffie Salanguit, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, said combined personnel of the Buadiposo-Buntong Municipal Police Station and the 41st Special Action Company of the 4th Special Forces Battalion were supposed to serve arrest warrants on Sukair Diocat and his companions, who are wanted for murder and frustrated murder cases pending before different courts.

Salanguit said Diocat and his alleged accomplices opened fire as police teams approached their location, triggering a gunfight that left five officers wounded.

Police officials in Lanao del Sur have yet to confirm whether Diocat and his companions were arrested during the operation, which turned violent.

Local executives said they had received reports that the target of the operation managed to escape.
