MANILA, Philippines — With nine more days left before the voter registration ends, the number of people who applied for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections has reached 4.49 million, according to the Commission on Elections.

Latest Comelec data showed that of the registrants, 2.31 million are women.

Among regions, Calabarzon posted the highest number of registrants with 717,350 followed by Central Luzon with 505,021, and Metro Manila with 468,827.

The Cordilleras recorded the lowest number of registrants with 61,269 followed by Caraga with 132,975 and Mimaropa with 133,535.

The Comelec said there were 11,394 voters who applied through the Register Anywhere/Anytime Program or RAP.

The poll body said qualified voters have until May 18 to register at any satellite/mall registration sites or at the office of the election officer.

The barangay and SK elections will be held this coming November.

15,000 cops to secure BARMM polls

Meanwhile, up to 15,000 police officers will secure the first parliamentary election in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on Sept. 14.

Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the DILG will ensure that the first BARMM elections will be peaceful and orderly.

“Security officials have been conducting dialogues with local leaders in the region in preparation for the coming elections. So far, violent incidents have been sporadic. We are going to intensify our preparations,” Remulla said.
