35 OFWs rescued from Cambodia trafficking ordeal | The wRap

Today’s headlines: OFWs, Switzerland explosion, Zohran Mamdani

Here are today’s headlines – the latest news in the Philippines and around the world:

Thirty-five Filipino migrant workers return home from Cambodia on New Year’s Eve after authorities rescued them from illegal recruitment and scam operations. Most of the workers were victims of human trafficking, lured abroad with promises of legitimate jobs only to be forced into scam-related work.

Around 40 people were killed and 115 others injured in a fire during a New Year’s Eve party at a bar at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland. Survivor accounts and videos suggest the blaze started at around 1:30 am local time, after sparkling candles got too close to the basement’s ceiling.

Zohran Mamdani officially becomes the mayor of New York City as he’s sworn in on Thursday, January 1. Mamdani vows to enact an aggressive agenda to make the United States’ largest city more affordable for the working class. — Rappler.com
