A TOTAL of 232 former rebels, now referred to as "Friends Rescued" or FRs, formally surrendered their firearms and returned to the folds of the law, Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez confirmed on Monday.

The turnover and reintegration ceremonies, held on Feb. 6 and facilitated by the Armed Forces of the Philippines' (AFP) 10th Infantry "Agila" Division, marked a major step in the FRs' transition to peaceful and productive lives.

The event was attended by key government officials and military leaders who underscored the significance of this development in the broader peace and security landscape.

Davao del Norte Gov. Edwin Jubahib hailed the formal surrender of the former communist rebels, calling it a "historic achievement" for the Davao Region.

"Today, as we witness the formal surrender of 232 former CTG (communist terrorist group) members, we are reminded that true victory is not just about eliminating threats; it is about transforming lives," remarked Jubahib.

Davao de Oro Gov. Dorothy Gonzaga echoed the statement and commended the FRs for abandoning armed struggle.

"We don't want a recurrence of what happened in the past," Gonzaga said as she expressed gratitude to the security sector for its relentless peacekeeping efforts in the province and the entire region.

Davao Oriental Gov. Niño Sotero Uy Jr. highlighted that the hard-earned peace in Davao de Oro has paved the way for significant social and economic progress.

"These achievements are proof that peace brings about progress. While we celebrate these wins, we [must] understand the responsibility that comes with it. Peace is fragile, and sustaining it requires continuous efforts," Uy emphasized.

Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (Opapru) Executive Director Cesar de Mesa, representing Secretary Carlito Galvez at the event, encouraged the FRs to embrace change as they reintegrate into mainstream society.

"This is our message to you: do not fear change. Instead, embrace it. Because this change signifies a new beginning for you and your families," de Mesa stated.

Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) chairman Leo Magno reaffirmed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s commitment to ensuring that FRs receive the necessary support as they transition to a new chapter in their lives.

No matter where you came from, we in the government stand with you in your journey towards a more peaceful, progressive, and better life," Magno assured.

In his keynote address, Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo emphasized the broader significance of the reintegration process, not only for the FRs but for their communities as well.

"We are not just celebrating a victory today; we are also recognizing the transformation in each individual's life and in our community," Lagdameo said.

"Today, we witness an important victory. Those standing before us now, who were once part of an armed group, have chosen peace and reintegration into society," he added.
