The e-jeep swerves as the driver tries to avoid a vehicle in front, its loose brakes failing, before striking an oncoming tricycle and plunging near the bridge

BULACAN, Philippines – An electric jeepney with malfunctioning brakes fell off a bridge in Bulacan on Tuesday, January 14, killing two people and injuring 20 others, the Calumpit municipal police said.

Tricycle driver Johnny Reyes, 44, a resident of Barangay Caniogan, Calumpit, and his passenger Angelica Esguerra, 27, died in the accident, police said.

The driver of the e-jeep, Orlando Manayag Jr., 53, a resident of Santo Tomas, Pampanga, was traveling along MacArthur Highway toward Apalit when he reportedly noticed the brakes had malfunctioned.

The tricycle was traveling in the opposite direction when Manayag noticed the brakes on his e-jeep were loose. He swerved to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him, but the e-jeep reportedly struck the tricycle. The vehicle then plunged down near the bridge, according to the police report.

The incident occurred around 1:40 pm in Barangay Iba Oeste and was reported to local police two hours later.

Jhen Mark Eleogo, 19, a student and one of the passengers, said the vehicle’s brakes failed while the driver was overtaking.

“The brake malfunctioned. The e-jeep was running fast, and then suddenly the brakes failed,” Eleogo told Rappler on Wednesday, January 15.

Eleogo added that the vehicle wasn’t full, with only the conductor standing.

“The driver was speeding, and it had been about 15 to 20 minutes since I boarded,” he said.

The victims were taken to the Bulacan Medical Center and other nearby hospitals for treatment.

Reyes and Esguerra were pronounced dead by attending physicians. – Rappler.com
