A total of 19 patients suffering from goiter will undergo surgery thanks to the Operation Bukol by GMA Kapuso Foundation and the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center.
According to a report on "24 Oras," Monday, the initiative is in commemoration of the Goiter Awareness Week on the fourth week of January.
Goiter results from the enlargement of the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck.
"'Pag meron tayong mataas na thyroid hormone, nagkakaroon tayo ng tinatawag na hyperthyroidism," said Dr. Gil Vicente, an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) consultant.
Among its symptoms include weight loss, anxiety, high heart rate and blood pressure, and hand tremors.
Doctors recommend eating iodine-rich food like seafood, using iodized salt, and getting a checkup if goiter symptoms have been observed.
The 19 patients passed the free screening conducted by the GMA Kapuso Foundation and JRRMMC. They attended a goiter awareness lecture and are already scheduled for operation.
