MANILA, Philippines — A 62-year-old man died while 20 others were injured when a modern jeep rammed into an armored van in Quezon City early yesterday.

The road mishap occurred at the intersection of Quezon and Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago Avenues in Barangay Bagong Pag-asa, according to the Quezon City Police District.

QCPD investigators said the jeep was traversing Quezon Avenue from the Elliptical Road when it hit the armored van, which was heading to East Avenue from North Avenue.

Twenty-one people from the jeep sustained injuries and were rushed by emergency responders to a hospital for medical treatment.

However, the 62-year-old man was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

“The QCPD extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of the deceased, and wishes a speedy recovery and fast healing to all those who were injured in the incident,” it said in a statement.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) summoned the drivers of both vehicles and imposed a 90-day suspension of their licenses.

LTO chief Markus Lacanilao placed the modern jeep and the armored van under alarm status.

“The LTO reminds all public utility vehicle operators and motorists to practice discipline, drive responsibly and ensure the safety of vehicles to prevent accidents on the road,” Lacanilao said.
