CEBU CITY — Around 1,500 households in the upland sitios of Mahayahay in Busay and Calvary in Apas will soon gain access to safe, steady and affordable water supply from the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD).

Long plagued by limited access due to their geographical location, the two sitios are among the so-called thirsty areas in Cebu City.

MCWD is addressing the problem through pipeline expansion projects aimed at reaching underserved communities.

The project has already been awarded to a contractor, but work initially faced delays as portions of the pipelines need to pass through privately owned roads and road right-of-way under the jurisdiction of the Cebu provincial government.

To move forward, MCWD secured the necessary permits from private landowners.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia also granted approval for excavation and pipe laying on capitol-owned roads after Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia personally requested her endorsement.

MCWD general manager Edgar Donoso, during a recent visit to the city hall, thanked Mayor Garcia for helping push the request through and expressed appreciation to the governor for supporting the water district's expansion plans.

With the laying of the pipes scheduled for completion next month, residents in these mountain communities, many of whom have never been connected to the water grid, will finally receive a reliable supply of clean water sourced from the Lusaran bulk water project.

MCWD said it remains focused on widening its service coverage through more expansion works and by tapping additional water sources to meet the growing needs of the public.

The MCWD is a government-owned and -controlled corporation that provides water services in Metro Cebu.

Its franchise area includes Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, and the municipalities of Consolacion, Liloan, Compostela and Cordova. MCWD also supplies water to parts of Talisay City and Minglanilla.

It sources water from deep wells, surface water and bulk water suppliers to serve the increasing demand across its service areas.
